Opal Necklace

The opal is a one of a kind hardened silica gel gem, which means it might look crystal, but it is actually not crystal. The name opal comes from the Sanskrit word "upala" which means "precious stone". Primarily mined in Australia, a good ten percent of opal is still mined in smaller areas such as Mexico and Brazil. Most famous of opal stones is the Australia gem opal stone. This jewelry is an expensive but popular luxury. There are different variations of quality for opal. The best of course would be pure opal. However, it does have one drawback. Pure opal may be pure, but it is colorless, and the impurities that make an opal “impure” are what give the opal its incredible colors. These colors range all over the spectrum of the rainbow. Opal is said to be the second precious stone with an emerald being the first. Yes, I thought it was diamonds too, but we were wrong.

So what do you do with an opal necklace? When is the right time to give an opal necklace as a gift? Where do you wear it? Opals are great in that they can be worn with anything. They change color with the tone of a women’s clothing and are considered to be a chic, “in,” item. If you are looking at anniversary gifts, this one is for the 14th, wedding that is. Hang in there. You can do it! Also, it is the birthstone for October, so if you are an October baby, you might be in luck for scoring the gemstone thought to be the Royalty of Gemstones. Where to wear it? Anywhere, but it often seen on the red carpets and other celebrity events.

There is an old wives tale that the opal is considered to be a lucky gemstone that carries magic with its brilliant colors. Some societies use them as good luck charms. Expensive four leaf clovers you might say. It is said that black opal is an incredible lucky stone. If you are worried about someone’s evil eye or traveling, this stone is said to work for you. It also is said to have powers that help centralize your mind and give you the motivation and energy to make it through the day. All of this being the case, opals are not just for women, although I have not seen a ton of men wearing opal necklaces, minus Harry Potter. As said before though, they are known to be magical, so my guess is that they are not just for the witches and warlocks. Not to mention they are a great investment. Like any good piece of jewelry, opal necklaces do not go down in value. Their enchantment, value and beauty last a lifetime.
